ỌYỌ STATE INAUGURATES 14-MEMBER PRIMARY HEALTHCARE BOARD

Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has charged members of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board to ensure an efficient and effective healthcare delivery at the state’s primary healthcare centres and health posts.
Governor Ajimobi, represented at the inauguration of the board by the state’s Commissioner for health, Dr Azeez Adeduntan, said this would ensure that general hospitals are decongested and work optimally.
The governor said that governments all over the world invest in primary healthcare centres to boost access to healthcare, especially for indigent persons, urging them to put in their best to make the agency thrive.
Acting Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Lanre Abass, in his presentation on the agency’s journey so far, said the board, among other things, would be expected to help determine the minimum resources required for health clinics, health posts and primary healthcare centres in the state.
Noting that Oyo State has 686 primary health care centres, he said 32 wards in the state still lacked at least one functional primary healthcare centre as stipulated in Nigeria’s health act.
“One of the strongest challenges to ensuring this is the manpower needed to work in them. For example, we have about 24 medical officers of health even though the minimum should be at least one medical officer of health in each local government. There are also 243 nurses and 1,088 community health extension workers to man these 686 facilities,” he stated.
While the law establishing the agency also needs to be gazetted, he said there was the need to renovate all dilapidated primary health care centres in the state and ensure that they are all equipped with basic equipment for healthcare delivery.
According to Dr Abass, repositioning the agency will also require the full implementation of the provisions of the Primary Healthcare board laws;  health works at the local government levels deployed to the board; as well as local government health agency boards instituted.
The 14-member board is headed by commissioner for health as its part time chairman. It has representatives from other state ministries, local government chairmen, Oyo State Hospital Management Board, development partners and medical professionals.
