COVID-19: ALL SOUTHWEST STATES DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS -- AYYCW TELLS FGN

The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Alliance of Yoruba Youths Council Worldwide (AYYCW) has commended the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria in curtailing the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus while as well condemning the sharing method of government’s palliative packages.

According to a release made available to newsmen by the President, Dr. Akande Kazeem Babatunde and  Secretary of the Council, Comrade Adegunju Tayo, urged the government to ensure provision of more Test Kits and Personal Protective Equipments especially to people of the South/West.

“The Federal Government  has started disbursing the N20,000 Conditional Cash Transfer to poor households across the country. The disbursement is said to have started for the past few weeks in some Council areas in Abuja and mostly Northern part of the Country.

“According to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadia Umar-Farouk, the Federal Government would be giving out the sum of N20,000 to each person for the next four months as a way of cushioning the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic.

This disbursement is part of the Federal Government’s efforts aimed at helping ‘vulnerable’ Nigerians get through the lockdown directive given by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, but people of the South/West geo-political zone seemed shortchanged in this arrangement.

“There is no tangible record of people from Yoruba speaking States benefiting from the funds and FG’s palliatives. We want this addressed as quickly as possible so as to maintain equity among all the ethnic groups in the Country”, the statement reads.

AYYCW that is known for defending the rights of all Yoruba youths worldwide however urged the State Governors, especially in the South/West to be more proactive in their efforts to assist the needy in their various states.

“Most of our Governors in the South/West need to do more in terms of showing care for the populace in this lockdown situation. While commending Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos State and all health workers at the forefront of this epidemic, we would also like to express our gratitude to all Yoruba sons and daughter that has been supporting people with their hard earn resources to cushion the effect of lockdown on the needy in the Yoruba land”, the group enthused.
