IBADAN LESSER OBAS REFUSE DROPPING CROWNS AFTER PROMOTION

The truce between the Olubadan of Ibadan , Oba Saliu Adetunji , and some members of the Olubadan -in- Council over the 2017 chieftaincy reform initiated by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi may have , once again, suffered a setback.

This is because the affected Ibadan high chiefs have denied the report that said they had agreed to drop their crowns .
One of the affected chiefs , High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola , said the new promotion did not invalidate their crowns .

Ajibola , who described the report as unrealistic , said, “ My promotion doesn ’t take away my crown ; disregard the fake news .”
Ajibola , who moved from the position of Osi Balogun to Otun Balogun, said the letter of promotion referred to him as ‘His Royal Majesty . ’

The letter, signed by one Mr Tunde Adeyanju from the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters , stated , “ It is my pleasure to inform you that as a result of the vacancy in the rungs of the ladder of Balogun of Olubadan of Ibadan , Governor Seyi Makinde has graciously approved your promotion to the post of Otun Balogun of Ibadanland with effect from November 20 , 2019 .

“ While congratulating you on this your well deserved elevation , I pray that God will grant you good health and long life to steer the ship of Ibadan traditional institution . I also pray that your tenure will usher in the much deserved peace , progress and development of Ibadanland in particular and Oyo State in general. ”

However, when contacted for reaction , the Director of Media and Publicity to the Olubadan , Mr Adeola Oloko , said , “ I shall contact the Kabiyesi , the Olubadan of Ibadan , for proper response to the claim by the high chiefs .

“ I cannot react in detail until I get proper directives from him as a result of the sensitive nature of the issue being mentioned here. The palace shall react appropriately in due course .”

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, High Chief Lekan Balogun , has described the invalidation of 21 Ibadan kings ’ installations as disappointing, stressing that there is nothing to contest in the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration review because nothing has changed . In a verdict delivered by Justice Olajumoke Aiki of an Ibadan High Court on Friday, the court ruled that Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who ordered the review and installation of the 21 kings on August 27 , 2017 , acted beyond his constitutional powers . Balogun , who was among the Ibadan high chiefs and baales that had their status elevated to kings , told our correspondent that Ajimobi, who initiated the move , was only demonstrating his eagerness to promote Ibadan city and elevate its chieftaincy system without changing the structure. Balogun stated, “The verdict is for the governor but we are subject of the matter. Naturally , I am disappointed at the ruling because initially, there was nothing to contest.

The lingering crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State on Tuesday took another dimension as a faction within the party, APC Unity Forum, announced its decision to leave the party for another one where its interest would be protected. The popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as Kwam 1, has confirmed the death of one of his daughters, Wasilat. Wasilat died in Canada after a brief illness. The deceased, said to be 34 years old, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday from complications arising from diabetes.  A popular Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has been released from the custody of the State Security Service (SSS), where he was detained for weeks. Mr Hamzat, who owns Agidigbo radio station in Ibadan, was detained at the SSS office in Ibadan on August 1. He was later transferred to the Abuja office of the agency. Individuals and groups, like the Association of Nigerian Comrades (ANC), have clamoured for the release of the broadcaster whose arrest was seen as unlawful and an infringement on press freedom. Narrating how he was arrested, the general manager of Agidigbo radio station, Ismail Idowu, said the SSS officers visited the radio station on July 31, demanding to see Mr Hamzat. The Ibadan M ogajis (family heads) , under the aegis of Council of Authentic Ibadan Mogajis, have issued a seven -day ultimatum to the 21 kings installed by the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, to withdraw their threat to recommend Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji , for removal or face the wrath of Ibadan people .
